Now the Berean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.
Acts 17:11
Just came across this. Is this something we do? Do we listen to the sermons on a Sunday, read our Bible notes, listen to recordings of Preachers and just take what they say has being the truth.
Here we see that a group of people who are not just hearing the message that is being spoken to them, but are questioning what they have heard. The person they are questioning is none other than Paul. Now Paul was the founding father of the church at Berea. Surely they would accept the message that Paul was preaching. But no, they went back to the Scriptures and examined them making sure what Paul said was true and on seeing the truth, believed and were saved.
So what can we learn here. Simply that just because the person who the saying something has a Phd, a dog collar, speaks in front thousands of people, as a million plus followers on Facebook or is preaching in our church doesn’t mean they are right, we need to go back to Scriptures ourselves and make sure it is correct.
We has a community of believes need to make sure that nothing is being added too or taken away from Gods Word. It is so easy to be taken in by the prosperity gospel or the subtle teaching of Bethel but if we are well grounded and refer back to the Holy Scriptures we should keep our souls safe.
Check it out for yourself…….
